How to Simulate a Remote Connection Test

Once you’ve configured Screens Connect, Tailscale, or NordVPN, it’s highly recommended to simulate a remote connection before leaving. This quick test helps confirm that your computer is actually reachable from outside your local network — preventing unpleasant surprises when you try to connect later.

Why This Matters

When you connect from your local network, Screens can automatically resolve your computer locally and use that information to perform a direct (local) connection.

In that scenario, Screens does not rely on remote connection information provided by Screens Connect, Tailscale, or NordVPN.

As a result, a successful local connection does not necessarily mean you’ll be able to connect remotely once you’re outside your home or office network.

How to Test a Remote Connection

Option 1: Use a Mobile Network

The easiest way to test is by using your iPhone or iPad’s mobile connection:

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi on your iPhone (or iPad, if it supports mobile connectivity).
  2. Open Screens and try connecting to your computer.
  3. If the connection succeeds, you’re good to go — your remote setup is working properly.

This method replicates what will happen when you connect while away from your local network.

Option 2: Use a Personal Hotspot

If your Mac or iPad doesn’t have mobile connectivity:

  1. Enable Personal Hotspot on your smartphone.
  2. Connect your Mac or iPad to that hotspot.
  3. Launch Screens and test your connection.

Like in Option 1, this setup simulates a remote environment since your device will no longer be connected to your local Wi-Fi network.
