When making an in-app purchase, you may occasionally be prompted to authenticate with your Apple ID before completing the transaction. This is a security measure implemented by Apple to ensure the safety of user accounts and prevent unauthorized purchases. Below are some common reasons why authentication may be required.
Security and Fraud Prevention
Apple may request authentication if it detects unusual activity, such as:
- A new device or unfamiliar location making a purchase.
- A series of rapid purchases in a short period.
- A recent password change or security setting modification.
This helps prevent fraudulent transactions and ensures only authorized users can complete purchases.
Payment Method Verification
If there is an issue with your payment method, Apple may require authentication to proceed. This can happen when:
- A credit card has expired or failed.
- A new payment method has been added to the Apple ID.
- The purchase is the first transaction using a specific payment method.
App Store Settings: Require Password Preferences
Your App Store settings determine when authentication is required for purchases. You can check these settings by navigating to:
iOS/macOS:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apple ID (your name).
- Select Media & Purchases > Password Settings.
The available options include:
- Always Require Password – Authentication is needed for every purchase.
- Require After 15 Minutes – Authentication is required once every 15 minutes.
- Never Require (for Free Apps Only) – No authentication is needed for free downloads.
If "Always Require Password" is selected, you will need to authenticate for every transaction.
Family Sharing & Ask to Buy
If you are part of a Family Sharing group, additional authentication may be required:
- Ask to Buy: If enabled for a child’s account, the purchase must be approved by the family organizer.
- Organizer Approval: Some purchases may require explicit approval from the organizer before being completed.
First Purchase in an App
If this is the first in-app purchase in a specific app, Apple may require authentication as an extra verification step.
App Store Policy Enforcement
Apple periodically verifies purchases to ensure compliance with App Store policies. This is especially common for:
- Subscriptions
- Consumable in-app purchases (e.g., virtual currency, tokens)
- Apps offering digital goods or services
If authentication is required unexpectedly, verify your Apple ID settings, payment method, and App Store preferences to ensure everything is up to date.
